About Hillndell Bearded Collies

The Hillndell Logo, an original pin and ink drawing, was provided by Mr. James L. Spracklen. Our love affair with Bearded Collies began over 15 years ago but like many purebred dog fanciers, it wasn’t a purebred Beardie that started it all for us. It was Indy, a rescued mix breed, who came home to live with us and our two children one Memorial Day weekend (hence the name) that began our love affair with Beardies. It wasn’t until Indy was about a year old that our veterinarian suggested that she had a lot of Bearded Collie in her. As we learned more and more about Beardies it became very evident that our veterinarian was right. The great, ever loving, forgiving, and full of life personality that we had fallen in love with was defiantly that of the Bearded Collie. So, when the time came to find a companion for Indy and another loving member of our family we naturally looked for a Beardie. By this time the kids were both off to college and we were facing the old empty nest syndrome. Gayla and I were pondering what we would do to occupy the void left after years of following and coaching our son’s sports and supporting our daughter in her love of dance. Our beloved Indy, a rescued mix breed, who we miss each and every day.

Thankfully, our search for a Beardie led us to Dr. Deb Thomas D.V.M. (Pentangle) and eventually to our first Bearded Collie, Daphne Kathleen (Pentangle’s Baby Mine). When we first meet Dr. Thomas we were really thinking about a pet and had not given a lot of thought about showing dogs and especially not becoming breeders ourselves. But Dr. Thomas asked if we would be interested in showing a new puppy and after some investigation into the sport and a lot of prayers we decided that this may be just what we were looking for to help occupy that void and boy has it ever. From that point on we were hooked and off we went head long into the wonderful world of Beardies.

Some seven years later we are blessed with a home full of Beardies. Of course Daphne, now Ch. Pentangle’s Baby Mine, remains the matriarch of our Beardie family followed by the lady in waiting Ch. Pentangle’s Fair Gwendolyn (Gwen). Gwen, a beautiful brown girl, joined our family in April of 2003 and was the first to deliver a Hillndell litter, all be it a litter of one. Marv, Hillndell’s Marvelous Debut, was born February 23, 2007 and is already well on his way to a great show carrier. Daphne then blessed us withour first full litter of six puppies on June 8, 2007 of which two are residing with us.
